Eel Pie Club : -LAUNCH OF THE DOWNLINERS SECT CD, 'CHINESE WHISPERS' - OLD EVENT
It will be a momentous occasion when R&B legends, The Downliners Sect, launch their long-awaited album, 'Chinese Whispers', with all but two of the songs written by original Sect members, Don Craine and Keith Grant. It is a rare treat to see the full Sect in the UK and they will be joined by a number of special guests, including Roger Cotton (ex Peter Green's Splinter Group).
Very much part of the London Rhythm n Blues scene in the 1960s, The Downliners Sect were the inspiration for David Bowie, Van Morrison and Thee Headcoats. They played at Eel Pie Island and took over The Rolling Stones' residency at Ken Colyer's Club in London's West End. They still attract crowds of thousands in Japan and Sweden, where their songs, 'Little Egypt' and 'I Got Mine' both reached No. 2 in the Hit Parade (The Beatles Rock n Roll Music and The Rolling Stones Satisfaction were in the Number 1 spots at the time), and recently appeared at The Gold Coast Casino, just off the Strip in Las Vegas.
Alan Clayson, journalist, critic and author, when referring to the Downliners album, 'Dangerous Ground', wrote in his book, 'The Beat Goes On' that “The Rolling Stones would do well to listen hard and learn”.
